About Us

Mission

The mission of 'Aikane o Nu'uanu (“Friends of Nuuanu”) is to foster a spirit of "ohana" between students, parents, faculty, staff and the community surrounding Nuuanu Elementary School.

History

Founded in 1975 as a nonprofit organization, 'Aikane o Nu'uanu has sponsored fundraising events and encourage volunteerism to enhance the quality of education at Nuuanu Elementary School.

Our major fundraising activities are a fall fundraiser, and the very popular Family Fun Night held each spring.  In addition, we sponsor a twice-yearly Campus Beautification day when parents, staff, students, and Cub Scout Pack 181 and Boy Scout Troop 181 tackle various maintenance and landscaping projects around our campus.

To assist the working parents of Nuuanu Elementary School, we also introduced the Early Arrival Program to provide supervised care in the morning before school begins.

Aikane's claim to fame is developing the afterschool program which years later would become the blueprint for the very popular state run A+ After School program.

In the 2008-2009 school year, Aikane initiated sponsorship of new Girl Scout troops.
